Does this make Guitar Hero TV 'fee-to-play'? Perhaps but does that stop the gameplay from being fantastic and the microtransaction model actually being fair for the consumer? No, it doesn't and people rating the game 1's, 2's and 3's because of some OPTIONAL in-game purchases that you can avoid if you wish. Most people condemn microtransations in retail games and I am one of them but in this case, I feel that the microtransations are incredibly fair to the player and they're one of the rare examples of microtransations done right.

Play tokens are built in microtransactions which are completely optional to the player and can be easily earned by playing through the streaming tracks on the two free channels. An always running music channel which you can hop on whenever you wish to either play the songs which are currently streaming on either channel 1 or 2 or you can go and play a song of your choice from the TV component using a play token. Think back to when MTV actually played music all of the time and that's what you get here. Now, onto the more controversial component of the game, Guitar Hero TV, an always online streaming music channel service which takes up the bulk of the game. To complete all of the content in the LIVE/single player component of the game, you shouldn't need more than a few hours free to dive in and indulge it all but even if it is short, it's satisfying to go from fairly small pits of people to gigantic crowds at the finales. The setlist on the LIVE component comes with 42 songs with tracks from Fall Out Boy, Eminem, Bring Me The Horizon, OneRepublic and even Skrillex, which will sound bad for most people but I found the majority of the setlist to be perfectly fine and incredible fun to play. It's a genuinely terrifying experience to start a song awfully and have three minutes of a virtual crowd breaking your concentration due to how loud they can be whilst booing you. Depending on how you play, the crowd will either cheer for you, stare at you blankly or if you're doing really badly, even start booing you and throwing stuff on stage at you. The whole single player component 'Guitar Hero Live' is portrayed as a cheesy FMV game which puts you as the guitarist in a band using pre-recorded footage recording specifically for the game. Right from the get go, you're greeted with a fairly intuitive tutorial showcasing the basic moves/controller prompts first and then progressing to the more advanced moves. I was expecting an average to decent music rhythm game from the product but I was incredibly surprised by a fantastic new take on the aging genre.
